Points can be reset without anyone noticing. Badges pile up until they stop meaning anything. But a streak counter sitting at "47 days" does something the others don't: it makes not showing up today feel like losing something you already earned. That's a completely different psychological trigger than earning a new reward, and it's the reason streaks spread across language apps, fitness apps, and study tools faster than almost any other mechanic.
The behavioral name for it is loss aversion, and it's blunt: people work harder to avoid losing a number than to gain the same number from zero. A student who's studied five days running isn't thinking about day six as a new opportunity. They're thinking about day five as something they'd be throwing away.
Why It Works Better Than Points
A points total only goes up, so there's no moment where the app makes you feel a decision matters. A streak resets to zero the instant you skip a day, which means every single day carries the same weight the first day did. That constant stakes-level is what keeps a five-minute study habit from quietly fading out after week two, which is usually where most study apps lose people.
It also scales down to almost nothing. A streak doesn't require finishing a whole course or hitting a big milestone, just showing up and doing the smallest unit of the thing, whether that's one quiz card or one flashcard. Low-friction daily contact turns out to matter more for habit formation than any single long session, which is the same logic behind why quiz apps built around short, repeatable sessions tend to outperform apps built around big study blocks.
The Social Version Hits Even Harder
Streaks get more powerful the moment another person can see them. A private streak only disappoints you. A shared streak, where a friend or study partner is tracking the same number, adds a second person whose day you'd be affecting by skipping. That single change, from a solo counter to a shared one, is usually enough to double how long people keep the habit going, because now quitting isn't quiet anymore.

None of this is new to education. The same loop, small consistent action plus visible unbroken chain plus fear of breaking it, is what turned browser games and mobile games into daily habits long before EdTech borrowed it. The same obsession with an unbroken run that drives speedrunners to protect a personal best is, mechanically, the same thing keeping a student opening a quiz app every morning before school.
The Limit of the Mechanic
Streaks motivate showing up, not learning well. An app that only tracks consecutive days can end up rewarding a rushed, low-effort session just as much as a genuinely focused one. The tools getting this right pair the streak with something that actually measures whether the material stuck, not just whether the app got opened.
